Let me get this out there first this book is different from most novels in verse for young people in that the poetry is a) poetry (not broken-up lines of prose) and b) rich, layered, musical, breathtaking, sometimes heart-stopping poetry. Moreover, I think there is an expectation that verse novels--and even the best of the best, such as the stunningly poetic verse novels of Margarita Engle and Jacqueline Woodson, support this expectation--should be extremely accessible reads.
