They are both travelling alone, both semi-retired and pushing 70. Susan Silverman, the longtime love of Spenser’s life, died a year ago leaving him to wallow in his suddenly suffocating autonomy. Meyer the Economist, McGee’s best friend and occasional partner in crime, died suddenly a month ago. He is in London on the advice of well-intentioned friends who felt a change of scenery, however temporary, might help him get over the loss. Upon their chance meeting they walk to a pub for an adult beverage where they gradually reveal their stories to each other. At the very busy Charing Cross underground station a couple of blocks away, four bombs explode at ten second intervals. Hundreds are killed. Terrorism has revisited one of its favorite cities. Spenser and McGee step outside of the pub just in time to see two dark-skinned men running toward them. They begin pursuit. Spenser catches his man while McGee’s foe gets away, but not before bashing McGee on the legs with a pipe. Then the real pursuit begins. Spenser solicits his friend Hawk’s help. When Hawk arrives from Boston, with a grateful Scotland Yard’s tentative blessing, the three men form a super posse and go after the one remaining bomber. The Trafalgar Square Bomber.
